From Walk-On to National Champion
Brett Ballard’s basketball journey began at Hutchinson Junior College and took a pivotal turn when he joined the University of Kansas as a preferred walk-on under Coach Roy Williams. Though he initially planned to teach and coach at the high school level, Ballard’s course changed when Bill Self arrived and offered him a chance to stay on as a volunteer. That leap of faith paid off—he spent seven years on KU’s staff, including the unforgettable 2008 national championship run.

Leadership Built on Action
What separates Ballard from many in his field is his belief in modeling the behavior he expects. Whether it’s how you treat family, show up every day, or handle adversity, Ballard’s message is consistent: Lead by example. His players learn through watching—not just listening. “We talk a lot about accountability, respect, and handling hard,” he says. “Because life’s never going to get easy.”

Building Complete Humans, Not Just Athletes
For Ballard, coaching isn’t just about basketball—it’s about life. “Winning games is my job,” he says, “but developing these young men for what comes after is my mission.” That includes preparing players for feedback, building mental resilience, and teaching responsibility. His players often say that handling criticism in the workplace is easy compared to Coach Ballard’s practices—a hidden superpower in today’s world.

Winning on the Court—and in the Community
Under Ballard’s leadership, Washburn Basketball has made five NCAA tournament appearances and recently reached the Division II Final Four. They also led the nation in attendance, a reflection of the team’s exciting play and the strong bond with the Topeka community. As the program upgrades Lee Arena with a $5 million renovation, Ballard continues to emphasize what matters most: the people, the culture, and the daily work that builds lasting success.
